Assuming you begin to stock up, you must go for such items as Indian Dhals, which are highly nutritious, and also buy many jars of curry sauce as dhal on its own is quite unpleasant. Condiments such as salt are vital as are various vinegars, also useful is honey Get plenty of raw sugar, not refined. Sea salt is Far Far better than rock salt. Save the rock salt for de-icing the paths and roads.
Next pasta and rice, large bags. Also Indian ghee which may be bought in tins this will last a long time.Use it rather than butter which won't last.
I will suggest green tea, which can be easily drunk without milk. There will be no milk once the grid goes down. Forget about meat, it is not entirely moral to kill an animal and eat it. but circumstances must dictate this to be neccessary.
Get Some large large tubs of cooking oil, and olive oil also , and garlic, jars of garlic which will last. Then I would suggest flax seed, and some means of crushing it - a hand grinder. It is very nutritious, as is hemp seed. Also red green and black lentils are a super super food also, get huge bags of them. Pulses are very good will keep well. Also oatmeal, is hugely recommended, raisins and dried fruit are useful and if you have to leave the house and go for the long walk, take oatmeal with you and some raisins, also some flax seed. They will keep hunger at bay for a few days.
I have mentioned basics such as toilet rolls, and soap. Get these and disinfectant, also detergent and cleaning stuff for the kitchen. hygiene is absolute in the post apocalyptic days, people will die simply by drinking unclean water. There will be plenty of that especially near towns where dead bodies have floated for a few days. Wherever worry and the loss of all that we are familiar with takes place we easily slip into depression, depression is the handmaid of all illness. so hygiene is the safeguard here. Not against depression but disease. Depression must be cured by other means. If you are in the country, get as close to nature as you can even if a tornado or hurricane has just passed by.
Such things as matches, scissors, and a very comprehensive first aid kit even if you cannot use all of it, someone else may be able to. Have some dental products so if a filling falls out you can at least patch up the tooth. One very very useful thing is tincture of iodine. this will heal wounds but also can be used to sterilize water.
Get one or even two Berkey filters, with doulton elements that are impregnated with silver. and get some spare elements. this alone will save your life. And make your own colloidal silver, have spare batteries for at least twlve months
have six cylinders of propane gas and a small barbecue at least to boil water. and use it sparingly .
I suggest six water butts one at least connected to the roof via a gutter. If you are on a sceptic rank you are extremely fortnate. As to how the people in the towns and cities will go on I dare not imagine it defies ones efforts to answer this question. I refer to not only the electric going down but hurricanes, earthquakes, and certainly tsunamis. The later will take down a communities drainage systems overnight. Now I strongly suggest having a rucksack packed and ready to go. Have oatmeal, raisins, dried fruit, and such that can be eaten easily Cooking is not an option when you are walking, on the road.
Now I suggest filling the car with stuff, a small primus stove, two gas bottles matches and food and clothing. now every time you go out in the car if it is still running take the big rucksack with you, you may never return. And take a water filter!!!!
So all these things and many more and there will be plenty of things forgotten about as the manure hits the fan and all hell breaks loose.
If you are in the city, don't stay there for not even a small village is safe once hunger and anger become friendly with each other, and those nice poeple and the nice children across the road, become the neighbours from hell. This is the time when you really find out who is a friend . And it may be there are very few, or even none who are friends. Only your own self and all the prepartion of the last few years. Mental more than physical.
So, most of this is common sense. And it requires just a little thought a clear mind and I would have three to five thousand dollars or pounds available tucked away just in case. And when money becomes a relic of the past you can always burn it on the fire. And keep yourself warm even .
